Somatic Experiencing® ($99/$149)
Have you ever experienced a car crash? Surgery? Extended illness? Digestive issues? TMJ pain? Assault and/or abuse? Sleep disorders? Some physical/mental/emotional ailment that just won't go away? These conditions and others may be helped by Somatic Experiencing®.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) Trauma Resolution Therapy is a psychobiological method developed by Peter Levine, PhD., for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. Dr. Levine noted that animals in the wild, while often exposed to life-endangering situations, spontaneously discharge excess "fight, flight, or freeze" energy once safe and rarely appear traumatized. Humans exposed to events perceived as traumatic, however, often become stuck in hypervigiliant response states, and thereby store unresolved physiological stressors. SE facilitates the gentle release of this stuck energy, thereby addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms.
SE does not require that the traumatized person re-tell or re-live the traumatic event. Instead, it offers the opportunity to engage, complete, and resolve—in a slow and supported way—the body’s instinctual fight, flight, freeze, and collapse responses.
SE is the perfect companion to bodywork, particularly the energetic modalities. The client is encouraged verbally and through light touch to become present in their body, and to simply notice the presence of, and any changes to, sensations. As the practitioner monitors and facilitates physical nervous system responses, the client is able to gradually develop an increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions. The discharge process that was arrested often years before can be completed, and equilibrium and health are restored.
